Electrochemical properties of transuranium elements in LiCl-KCl eutectic molten salt for reprocessing nitride fuel

Kurata, Masaki

Proceedings of Conference on Molten Salts in Nuclear Technology (CMSNT 2013), p.145 - 156, 2013/01

JAEA has proposed a double strata concept for partitioning and transmutation of transuranium elements, in which the second P-T cycle is consisted of an ADS for transmutation and of a pyro-reprocessing for partitioning. Since the nitride fuels for the ADS contain large amounts of TRU, comprehensive knowledge on electrochemical properties for TRU, such as Np, Pu, Am, and Cm, in LiCl-KCl eutectic molten salt is necessary for developing the pyro-reprocessing. It is also required to study anodic dissolution behavior of the spent nitride fuels and re-nitridation of recovered TRU. Based on knowledge, a process flow diagram is being constructed. This paper highlights the fundamental dataset on the electrochemical properties of TRU obtained in JAEA, as well as preparation of facilities and TRU samples.
